Introduction

We invite you to take part in this research study. Choosing whether or not to take part in this research is entirely your choice. There will be no impact on you if you decide not to participate in the research. The information below tells you about what is involved in the research, what you will be asked to do and about any benefit, risk, inconvenience or discomfort that you might experience.

 

You should discuss any questions you have about this study with me, Phillip or with my research assistant (RA). Please ask as many questions as you like. If you have questions later, please contact me at contact information provided above. 

           

Why are we doing the study?

This purpose of the study is to explore your experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to your nutritional health and body image. We hope to provide critical understanding on the current areas of nutritional support that LGBTQ individuals need.

 

Who can take part in the study?

Eligibility for the study would require that study participants be self-identify within the LGBTQ communities, be 18 years of age or older, live in Canada, and are able to speak and understand English.

 

What will you be asked to do??

You will be asked to participate in an on-line questionnaire (approximatively 30-60 minutes). 

 

Are there any benefits or risks in participating?

Benefits: You may feel a sense of accomplishment from participating in this project. Participating in the study might not benefit you directly, but we might learn things that will benefit others in the area of body image and LGBTQ dietetics.

 

Risks: The risks of this research are minimal.

Thank you for taking the survey. You may experience discomfort about talking about issues such as body image concerns, eating practices, and the influence of COVID-19 on their health. If so, please reach out to one of the organizations we have provided below.

How will my information be protected?

We will not ask for your name in the survey. All other identifying information will be removed from the data. In publications, you will be given a pseudonym.

 

Information that you provide to us (me and my RA) will be kept private to the best of our abilities. All your identifying information and consent forms will be securely stored in a locked cabinet at Mount Saint Vincent University. Only the research team (me and my RA) will have access to your original information. The people who work with us (i.e. the transcriptionist) have an obligation to keep all research information private. All electronic records will be kept secure on the researcher’s password-protected computer. All data will be destroyed 5 years after completion of the project.

 

What Will Happen with the Findings?

We will describe and share our research findings in public presentations, journal articles, community venues and reports, and in teaching venues. We will use direct quotes in the reports and publications of this work that will be associated with a pseudonym.

 

Compensation / Reimbursement

If you choose to provide your name and email at the end of the questionnaire you will be entered into a draw to win a $50 gift card. You must complete the questionnaire to be entered into the draw. The gift card will be distributed electronically through the researcher’s account at Amazon.ca. Therefore, Amazon.ca will have a record of your email for distribution and redemption of your gift card. There is the possibility that your email address for gift card receipt may be stored outside of Canada.

 

What if I decide to stop participating?

Your participation is voluntary, and you can leave the quesstionnaire at any time.

 

Please be aware that if you do end the survey, any information you provide before will be part of the study and cannot be removed.

 

How do I obtain the results?

You can obtain a brief report of the findings by providing your email at the end of the survey (optional).
